Three RSUC X-ray diffractometers are used to measure residual stress and texture in and near the surface of ceramics and alloys. One 4-circle Scintag PTS goniometer is equipped with an 18-kW rotating anode generator, while the second has a fixed target sealed tube X-ray source. Both systems provide a highly flexible sample tilt system, divergent or near parallel beam optics, and energy dispersive detectors. A position-sensitive detector is also available. Large samples (to a few kilograms) can be accommodated. Access to the synchrotron beam line X14A at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS)is also part of the RSUC. The energy of the ultra high intensity, parallel beam can be changed to meet experimental needs at X14A.
