Brief Bio:

  • Dr. Bei received his BS (1991) and MS (1994) in Metallic Metals and Heat Treatment from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and General Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals, Beijing (PRC). From 1994 to 2000, he worked as an assistant engineer and engineer in the General Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals (Beijing, PRC). From 2000 he studied at the University of Tennessee and received his doctoral degree in 2003. From 2004 to 2007, he worked as postdoctoral research associate at Materials Science and Engineering Department, the University of Tennessee. He joined the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2008 where he currently is a research staff member in the Alloying Behavior and Design Group. In 2008 he was appointed as an adjunct Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee.

Research Areas:

  • Fundamental and applied studies on plastic deformation and fracture of a variety of advanced materials (refractory alloys, precious metals; superalloys; bulk amorphous alloys; ordered intermetallic alloys).
  • Synthesis of multiphase intermetallic/metallic composites with well-controlled microstructures and understanding their multi-scale mechanical behavior.

  • Outstanding Symposium Paper, MRS Fall Meeting 2008, to be published in Journal of Materials Research (2008).
  • Ribbon Award for Outstanding Paper, MRS Fall Meeting Proceedings (2004).
  • Best Poster Award, Intermetallics Symposium, MRS Fall Meeting (2004).
