Research Interest:

  • Dr. Lance is in charge of the vibrational spectroscopy facilities for the High Temperature Materials Laboratory in the Materials Science and Technology Division at ORNL. His main research interest is in using vibrational and fluorescence spectroscopy to measure stress in ceramic materials. He also works with the automotive industry to solve materials problems that face various emission control technologies. His diverse research interests include:
    • Particulate Matter Fouling of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Coolers in Diesel Engines
    • Failure and degradation of Diesel Particulate Filters
    • Catalyst Characterization
    • Fracture behavior of Structural ceramics, i.e. Si3N4, SiC, Al2O3, ZrO2.
    • Corrosion of alumina forming alloys
    • Indentation effects in ceramics and semiconductors.
