The purpose of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) visiting scientists program, which is sponsored by the Republic of Korea, Ministry of Knowledge Economy, is to facilitate international personnel exchanges with research institutes known for their cutting-edge advanced materials research and technology and to promote closer scientific and technological cooperation in the development of energy technologies. Selected by KIAT as one of five international organizations to participate, ORNL is the only DOE national laboratory to participate. Additionally, the ORNL Material Science & Technology Division was selected to host eight of the 17 Korean researchers chosen to participate in this inaugural international program. The remaining nine researchers were placed at the University of California - Berkeley, IBM, the National Institute for Material Science (NIMS), Japan, and the Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM), Germany.
