Development of Advanced High-Performance Materials Requires Broad Expertise and State-of-the-Art Facilities and Instruments

First Principles Theory:

  • Understand the fundamental behavior of materials

Modeling of Complex Phenomena:

  • Describe the relation between composition, structure, and properties
  • Describe complex, multi-length and time scale processes

Synthesis and Processing:

  • Creating unique compositions and structures at the atomic, meso, and macro scale, using traditional and unique new methods

Structural Characterization:

  • Determination of the elemental distributions and structure from the atomic to macro scale

Physical and Mechanical Property Determination:

  • Determine the effects of operating environment on properties (e.g. corrosion science, irradiation effects)
Provide a basis for material selection, component design, life prediction

Technology Transfer:

  • Partner with industry for scaleup to industrial production
