Dr. Gerard (Gerry) M. Ludtka is a Fellow of the ASM International, National Chair of the Heat Treating Society R&D Committee, recipient of the prestigious DOE E. O. Lawrence Memorial Award for Materials Research, and Distinguished Research Staff Member of the ORNL Materials Science & Technology Division (MS&T), He has over 30 years of applied and basic research experience within industry (Boeing-Vertol and General Motors Research) and at a DOE national weapons complex (Y-12 National Nuclear Security Complex) and energy laboratory (ORNL). His extensive expertise in the development and application of heat treatment distortion simulation software such as his QUENCH SIMULATOR for weapons related materials formed the groundwork for the $9.6M DOE R&D program that inevitably developed into the commercial DANTE heat treatment simulation software. During his tenure in the MS&T Division prior to joining the Materials Processing Group, Gerry has been a member of the Thermophysical and Diffraction, Mechanical Property, Materials Process Modeling (served as Acting Group Leader), and Building Materials Groups.  Dr. Ludtka’s background includes broad materials characterization expertise including microcharacterization techniques (TEM, SEM) and phase transformation kinetic dilatometry, mechanical property characterization, thermal-magnetic processing, and thermomechanical processing and forming of materials. In addition, he currently has 11 U. S. Patents/patent applications and over 40 technical publications and has been the recipient of the Advanced Technology Award International Hall of Fame of the Inventors Club of America, 5 Department of Energy Weapons Complex Awards of Excellence, 3 Martin Marietta Systems Awards of Excellence, and 3 National Security Complex (Y-12) Awards of Excellence.
