“Advanced Heating System”, receives 2005 Emerging Technology Award from Ohio Governor Bob Taft

“Advanced Heating System for High-Performance Aluminum Forgings”, recipient of the 2004 R&D100 Award and a technology developed by the researchers at the Materials Science & Technology Division’s Materials Processing Group was recently honored by receiving the 2005 Ohio Emerging Technology Award from Ohio Governor Bob Taft. The award was presented to Queen City Forging Co., Cincinnati that uses rapid infrared (IR) heating thermal technology to increase processing speed and reduce costs while providing improved mechanical properties in aluminum forged components. The Emerging Technology recognizes a company’s valuable progress in either advancing existing technologies or pursuing cutting-edge, emerging technological developments.

“Advanced Heating System” was jointly developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Northeastern University, Queen City Forging Company, Komtek, Forging Industry Association (FIA), and Infrared Heating Technologies. Research efforts for this technology were supported by US Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program (ITP), Supporting Industries, Industrial Materials for the Future (IMF), and Aluminum Industry of the Future (IOF).

Announcement of the award was published in the American Society for Metals’ Heat Treating Progress Magazine, January/February 2006 issue. For more information, please visit: (Ohio Companies Receive Emerging Technology Awards)
