Professor Narendra B. Dahotre has been elected a Fellow of the ASM International, a materials information society. The honor of Fellow represents recognition of his distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. His citation reads, “For pioneering contributions to research and development of surface engineering and laser based processing of materials”. His nomination was jointly endorsed by Oak Ridge ASM International Chapter and ASM Surface Engineering Task Force (formerly Surface Engineering Sector).
Professor Dahotre holds a joint faculty appointment with the University of Tennessee and the Materials Processing Group of the Materials Science & Technology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He has served ASM International for 15 years as member of several technical committees and sectors in Surface Engineering, and Technical Programming Board. Recently he has organized two International Congresses in Surface Engineering and edited the proceedings of these congresses. He has been active with Oak Ridge ASM Chapter where presently he serves as Membership Development and Member Records Chair and remains a member of the Executive Committee of the Chapter.
His professional, research and academic achievements and his seminal contribution to the field of Surface Engineering include over 100 technical publications, 4 book chapters, editor of 11 books, 15 US Patents, direct supervision of several Ph.D.(8) dissertations and M.S.(15) theses. He is member of Editorial and/or International Advisory Boards of Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Advanced Engineering Materials and, Materials and Manufacturing Processes. He is internationally known for his contribution to the field of laser surface engineering and has uninterruptedly conducted pioneering work in implementation of high power lasers for surface engineering. His research has addressed fundamental issues in laser surface engineering of materials for corrosion/oxidation and wear/erosion resistant surfaces. He has successfully demonstrated the understanding and application of laser based surface engineering on diverse materials systems in applications fields such as auto, aerospace, textile, chemical, etc.
