Goal: Develop method for softening of aluminum using plasma arc lamp so
that impact-absorbing crumple zones may be engineered into extruded aluminum
tubes used for front frame rails.

Accomplishments:

  • Softening of tubes without need for direct contact of heating elements
  • Heating rates of 200°C/s allow for very rapid processing
  • 50% reduction in hardness in tubes
  • Radiant heat transfer model predicts heat affected zone
