Goal: Develop method for softening of aluminum using plasma arc lamp so
that impact-absorbing crumple zones may be engineered into extruded aluminum
tubes used for front frame rails.

Accomplishments:
- Softening of tubes without need for direct contact of heating elements
- Heating rates of 200°C/s allow for very rapid processing
- 50% reduction in hardness in tubes
- Radiant heat transfer model predicts heat affected zone
