CFCC Composites Code - The Approach to Damage Modeling

CFCC composites will exhibit multiple damage mechanisms (i.e., matrix micro-cracking and fiber fracture) prior to ultimate failure. The appropriate modeling approach must account for these mechanisms in order to accurately predict the resulting non-linear stress-strain behavior. The approach applied in the CLASS II - CFCC code can be summarized as follows:

• Develop Damage Models for Individual Effects
  • Axial Bundle Cracks Under Axial Tension
  • Transverse Bundle Cracks Under Transverse and Axial-Shear Loads
• Integrate the Individual Effects into a Combined Damage Model to Determine Damage Effects at Composite Specimen Level Subjected to General In-Plane Loading
