The research activities in the MST Division consisting of twenty-two groups can be grouped into six technical themes

1. Theory and modeling at multiple scales,
   
   
2. Designed synthesis of condensed matter physics systems, alloys, structural ceramics, and specialized crystals,
   
   
3. Structural characterization via electron, ion, photon and neutron sciences,
   
   
4. Comprehensive physical and mechanical property characterization,
   
   
5. Interaction with extreme environments (temperature, corrosive media, radiation), and
   
   
6. Applied materials physics (superconductivity, thermoelectrics, hydrogen storage, photovoltaics, catalysis, energy storage)
