Carbon Materials Technology Group

The Carbon Materials Technology Group of the ORNL Materials Science & Technology Division is actively involved in the development of carbon-based materials for high-tech applications in the nuclear (both fission and fusion) and aerospace industries.

Examples of some of these carbon materials are GraphNOL N3M, a high-strength graphite developed for missile nose tips for the U.S. Navy, Carbon-Bonded Carbon Fiber (CBCF), a light weight thermal insulator developed for NASA; Carbon-carbon composite brake and frictional materials; and Carbon Fiber Carbon Molecular Sieve (CFCMS), a monolithic porous carbon material with high surface areas used for the separation of gases and liquids on the molecular level.
